It's not really bad as it sounds. Look at this way. You were able to use more of the car than you contracted for, interest and tax free. Paying the mileage penalty at the end in stead of up front affords you this. Yes, you have to come up with the cash, but overall it is better than having a higher payment for the last 63 months.

I leased through US Bank in a 63 month lease back in '04. My lease is up (last payment due in a week) with a lease end date of 9/26. I don't want to keep the car - but I am over the mileage (by 7k miles or $1260). My lease also calls for a $395 termination fee. My buyout is somewhat high $16,165. According to Edmunds, the Trade In value is 12,666; private party sale value $14,885 and delear retail $16,974. I just spoke with someone at US Bank and they basically said they would sell it to me for the contract price - less my last payment ($550). The thought of paying them $1700 to take it back is painful. Any ideas?
Thanks!
